Helena Gijsbers van Wijk was born and raised in Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia), in the city of Liberec in the Northren part of the country. Growing up during the time when Europe was still divided into East and West made Helena very sensitive to socio-political issues, a fact that would repeatedly emerge in her work.
Since her early childhood, it was clear that Helena was artistically inclined. She studied music and visual arts. During her teenage years she moved to the capital city Prague where she studied at and received Graduation Certificate from the Prague Music Conservatory. In 1990 she received her MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
Helena relocated to the United States in 1990. After short stay in New York and New Jersey she moved with her future husband to Pasadena, Texas, where she currently lives. She maintains a studio in Downtown Houston in the Warehouse District. She is a painter, sculptor, and a ceramist. Helena frequently axhibits locally and nationally, and she teaches private ceramic classes at her studio.
